So, I am sold… I want to buy quinoa! But where? I remember thinking, “Do they even sell it at the grocery store?” Well I checked, and to my surprise one of the grocery stores in town had a few kinds. I grabbed them all, and to make a long story short I was not very pleased with how it tasted. This basically meant, as much as I wanted to eat healthy, I think my Taco Bell Volcano Taco’s are going to make it to my stomach a lot more often. So as I was loosing all faith in Quinoa, I decided to go to a local organic store. It’s a night in day difference, and I was 100% happy until I realized I had to go to the expensive specialty store to get this. I decided to look online and low and behold I can get 4 times at much for only 1.5 times the cost with free shipping!

Taking The Sting Out Of Bug Bites

(NC)-In most cases insect bites are harmless and if left alone, the irritation will subside within 48 hours.

However, for some people, particularly children, scratching bites may lead to a highly contagious bacterial skin infection called impetigo. Left unchecked, impetigo can spread to other parts of the body and even from person to person.

As a family physician, I recommend the following tips to ensure you and your family maximize your summer fun and avoid this irritating skin disease:

Apply an effective insect repellent as directed. As an alternative to chemical-based repellents, I recommend citronella-based products such as Natrapel®, particularly for young children.

Avoid scratching. To calm the itching, traditional products such as calamine lotion may be useful. I also recommend my patients use AfterBite®, a product designed to neutralize the allergens that cause the itch.

Keep fingernails short and clean. The bacteria streptococcal, which causes impetigo, hides under fingernails and enters the body when scratching the bite. Children are more vulnerable to this disease because streptococcal is often found in sand piles where kids play.

Recognize the symptoms. Impetigo is characterized by a red bump on the skin where yellow pus accumulates and dries, leaving a scab that can be itchy.

Protect the infection. Impetigo spreads easily through direct body contact, sharing towels, bedding and clothes. Although it is not a serious disease, it needs immediate attention to stop it from spreading.

Seek treatment. The best way to avoid impetigo is to treat a bug bite as soon as possible. Should impetigo develop, oral antibiotics and antibiotic creams may be required as prescribed by your doctor.

Meguiars RV and Marine Boat Cleaners and Waxes; Test Results

One of the most famous and popular brands in the wax industry is Meguiar’s. Meguiar’s has stood the test of time as a brand name. Some of the after market competitors of theirs as well as the larger users of the product have complained that Meguiar’s has turned their back on the professional user market for the consumer market through their newest and largest customer Wal-Mart. Many in the auto, aircraft and boat detailing industries have even been critical of Meguair’s recently because they feel this is a slap in the face to the loyal operator who has paid premium prices for quality products and now can see those with the Meguiar’s brand name on the shelves.

We tested the RV and Boat product lines from Meguiars. What we like about Meguiar’s RV and Boats detailing products line is that they have made a step by step guide for different levels of oxidation, surfaces and paints. Their Flagship soap Number 65 is excellent as well as their Gel Wash (Number 54) made for all gel coat surfaces. We felt that for a professional Boat Cleaning Business that these products were somewhat over priced and admit they work well but too costly for a small 16-ounce bottle. Unless you buy it online you will find the price outrageous at the local Marinas and Boat Stores such as the Marine West chain.

We did enjoy the sheeting action on the surfaces after use of the product. Using inline injection from a bucket of soapy water did not work very well. The product did appear very benign so we do not feel that a little soap getting into the water around the Marina would be any issue. On their cleaners and polishes for the Marine Industry we found ourselves okay with these products, but felt we had once again paid to much for them. Although the competition “Star Brite” is also heavy handed on the price points. I guess assuming that boat owners will be willing to pay more since it is for a boat. We did not see all that much difference between these products from the marine industries to that of the auto industry Meguiar’s product line. Perhaps a few small ingredient changes for UV gel coat protection and fancy repackaging, but you will have to be the judge on that.

Meguiar’s Color Restorer seems to be okay for what it is being able to remove small marks and scuffs, but we also found that a polymer solvent wax did the same for instance Auto Magic’s Sealer Wax or the Diamond Shine Products. We did not see the reason to purchase this product for professional use other than to keep the brands you use consistent. Also we found that these other waxes with solvent did not damage anything and actually worked better than the Color Restorer (Number 44) and the next up product Oxidation Remover (Number 49). The One Step Compound by Meguiar’s (Number 67) is not too impressive, but we are not fond of compounds anyway and the product is hard to use, thick and under whelming, although the results were decent, it did most of what you would expect it too. It did seem to have one other property that most products that we use in the industry did not have and that is that it seemed to put some properties back into the fiberglass. Someone had come up to me today and asked what was the best wax to use on an RV and fiberglass area. A lot has to do with the decals, surface, paint and level of oxidation. This same premise goes for boats, personal watercraft and yachts. The Waxes in the Meguiar’s line we were somewhat impressed with and we are relatively hard to please. So this is a thumbs-up for them. Their premium flagship wax it seemed to be adequate, on ease of use we give it a 5 on a scale of 1-10. It is said to last a long time, but on a salt-water boat we question what that means. Meguiar’s Pure Boat Wax (Number 56) seemed to work good yet we found it had in it Silicone, polymer blend with Brazilian Carnauba and the problem with this blend although the shine was excellent is that on Polyurethane there are issues with some silicones and with Imron there are issues with carnauba waxes. So if you take this special boat wax and apply it to the RV’s with custom paints we have to wonder if we may cause issues. So this may not be the best for our team to use on the trucks but certainly good enough for the average citizen with a boat. Now for a good touch up product for a Boat Show account we did like the Quick Wax Marine Number 59, with a trigger spray and also the same product in an aerosol can. We also thought that it was smart of Meguiar’s to custom label all the car care products for their boat line. Similar to the way that Zep Chemicals often changes their product labels to conveniently be ready for another cleaning use. MSDS

Choosing the Right Headlight Restoration Service

So you have yellow, cloudy, ugly headlights. You called the dealer to get a price to replace them and you cannot believe the price! What now? You have basically 2 options. 1. Get a quality headlight Restoration kit.
2. Find someone who provides a Headlight Restoration service.

If you have decided you want to find someone to provide the service, how do tyou decide who to use?

The fact is in some areas it is hard to find anyone who provides this service and in other areas there is a ton of services.

The first thing to consider is this. Are there many people offering the service in your area? If there are, it can be both good and bad. Good because you have a selection to choose from, bad because many of them should not be performing this repair at all, and some are just not good at it.

One person in my area of Jacksonville actually admits on video that he “ripped a headlight out” while buffing the headlight. This person has no business doing anything with a buffer what so ever!

So, things to keep in mind when choosing the company to restore your headlight lenses.

How much do they charge? Some people make the mistake of trying to find the cheapest service. Remember this saying is true and always has been. “You get what you pay for!” The truth is cheaper is almost never better.

You should find someone who is in the middle price range and who has been in business for a long time. (2-3 years.) Why should they be in business a long time?

Because those people care about their business and have a track record to prove it and know what it takes to succeed. That is customer satisfaction!

Why middle price range? Well, you do not want the cheapest because he will not care how good the service he performs is… he will spend as little time as possible on it and expect you to understand, you will not have high expectations because you are not paying much so you WILL compromise and you will get what you pay for.

You do not want the most expensive because they often pay a lot on advertising and defray the cost by charging more, and rely more on quantity to make a living rather than quality!

What you want is a family business (or similar) who relies more on word of mouth advertising because he does a good job and cares about his customers.

Did you know there is more than 1 way of effectively “restore” headlight lenses?

This is very important when deciding who you will use to restore your lenses. There are only two ways to effectively restore the headlight lenses. Anything and everything else is hype and lies. Whatever method they use they need to be skilled at either or both!

Usually they use one method and know nothing about the other or try to demonize it if they do, or they make wild outlandish claims about the service as if this was the greatest invention since the light bulb.

The 2 effective methods are almost identical. However, they differ in the restoring to clarity phase of the restoration process. In other words, how they make them clear and shiny again. There are some drawbacks to both methods.

This is a very important consideration. One method many use is the application of clear to the lenses. There are some very serious draw backs to this method.

1) Clear is paint, and paint needs something to adhere to in order to stick to the surface it is painted to. The problem with most that use this method is they have no training in the application of automotive finishes. Case in point: one local dealer here in Jacksonville uses someone who applies Clear coat paint to the lenses he restores. Many of those headlights he has clear coated have the clear coat peeling off the lenses. There were at least 20-30 cars he had “restored” that were peeling.

2) There are basically 2 types of clear coat. Single stage paint and 2 part clears. Single stage clears are super cheap, around $20 a gallon whereas 2 part clears range any where from $100 a gallon to $250 a gallon depending on brand. Only 2 part clear has UV protection. Another draw back that discourages someone from using this quality 2 part clear is the waste associated with their use. The 2nd part of the clear is a catalyst or hardener which means whatever you do not use has to be discarded. The clear will harden within a few hours even if sealed. The average pair of lenses needs less than 2 oz. of spray-able clear the rest is waste. It is also very difficult to accurately mix very small quantities of clear.

3) They also need the right spray equipment to properly atomize and spray automotive clear. You have to use a full size spray gun and they need to know how to properly maintain and clean this expensive equipment.

My recommendation is do not use a service that applies clear to your lenses unless they are a trained automotive paint technician and have access to the right equipment.

The 2nd method relies on buffing to restore clarity to the lenses. We have used both methods and prefer buffing for numerous reasons.

Another draw back to the use of clear not mentioned above is it is difficult to get it to “hide” all of the sand scratches caused by the restoration process of this service. Since it needs something to “bite” into you cannot sand with anything finer than 400-600 grit sand paper. If you do you run the risk of adhesion failure mentioned above.

With buffing however, you can buff out nearly 100% of any and all scratches. A good quality paint shop will wet-sand and buff any painted repairs they do. Wet-sanding and buffing a new paint repair can be the difference between an awful, less than mediocre repair to a quality show room paint finish. All surface imperfections in the paint can be repaired by wet-sanding.

It is this principle of basic paint repair that makes this restoration process so effective. There are however, some drawbacks to this method as well. Buffing compound is a type of liquid paste or similar and it tends to hide the scratches you are trying to buff by acting as a wetting agent.

Even the most skilled paint technician has to pay attention to this detail when buffing out sand scratches. The problem with this service is it is an easy repair but it does take skill to effectively wet-sand and buff. Most who offer headlight restoration services just are not qualified. They simply do not have the right kind of experience. The job may look good when they finish but once the compound dries you will see everything they missed and it can be very disappointing.

The other problem with this method is you have one protection against UV damage from the future. Keep in mind though unless they use a 2 part clear the clear will not have UV protection either. There is something you can do to protect the lenses though. It is as simple as waxing them.

I have seen cars 1 year old with the paint ruined because the car owner did not wax his paint job. Wax and polymer Sealants are what is know as sacrificial barriers. The wax or sealer forms a barrier to the elements and is “sacrificed” instead of your paint job. This is why regular paint maintenance is so essential to the life of your car’s paint job.

So applying a wax or automotive paint sealer to your headlights regularly will go a long way towards protecting them from future damage. It is worth pointing out that the headlights never had any UV protection in the first place.

Again my recommendation is use a qualified automotive paint technician when using this method of the service. An automotive painter will have specialized skills that only he will have. And as I have outlined he will need those skills to properly restore your headlight lenses to like new appearance.

Beginnings of the Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

Epiphone acoustic guitars were eventually manufactured by a company founded in 1837 by a man named Anastasios Stathopoulo. A Greek timber merchant’s son who was not to tread in his father’s footsteps. He instead crafted musical instruments such as violins, lutes, and the lioutos, a traditional Greek instrument. His creations were to eventually bear his name, A. Stathopoulo.

In 1917 the company came to be known as The House Of Stathopoulo. Its name was changed by Epimanonodas Stathopoulo, or Epi, as he was known, the son of Anastasios. By that time he had been in charge of the company for two years due to his father’s death. He was just 22.

After the end of World War One when Epi realized that the mainstay of his company, the mandolin, did not have the popularity it once had he made the decision that the company was to manufacture banjos for the first time. This adaption of his product line was prompted by the growing popularity of the banjo and the need to change with the times. He carefully ensured that the high quality of workmanship that the company was noted for would continue in the manufacture of the new product line.

The name Epiphone became officially registered in 1924. Epimanondas, who was now president in addition to general manager, united his nickname Epi and phone, the Greek word for sound, to give the company a name reflected the change in its identity.

The recorder series of guitars were the first ones Epiphone manufactured. The guitars were not too popular. 1928 was the first year they were produced. Sales were not strong because the guitars were thought to lack volume, be overly ornate, and not large enough in size. Another essential factor for sales of the series that was critically lacking was celebrity endorsement.

Three years later, in 1931, the new archtop guitars, in contrast, became very popular. The earlier flaws were not a factor as the guitars did not lack celebrity endorsements, were made larger, and had volume desired.

The switch from banjos to the manufacturing of guitars happened at just the right moment in time as the banjo’s popularity started to decline. Thus Epiphone was able to escape the fate of the majority of the other banjo manufacturers. This was thanks to Epimanondas Stathopoulo and the keen business sense he possessed. In fact it was one of just a few banjo manufacturing firms to make the transition successfully to guitars.

Epiphone acoustic guitars made from 1937 to 1956 are among the most desirable of instruments to today’s collectors. They are considered to be among the highest quality vintage archtop guitars of factory manufacture ever made. Among these most desired of collector’s the guitars that are the most coveted are the professional class models that the reputation of the company was built on.

Washburn D10S Acoustic Guitar Review

The Washburn D10S Acoustic Guitar is one of the best selling guitars in the world. Not everything that is popular is great however so does this one live up to its popularity and achieve the status of been one of the best acoustic guitars around.

It has a mahogany neck with a fully bound rosewood fretboard and a nice natural finish ( a black version is also available). The tuners are grover styled and are pretty good, if not amazing.

The sound is a beautiful deep, full tone which is perfect for those that don’t want to be messing about with amps and electric and just want to sit down and strum. It can also be fairly loud if the strings are strummed a tad bit harder. A lower action would have made the guitar even better to play.

I reviewed the D10S shortly after testing the EG530SSC and although the Washburn has a great sound it doesn’t quite match that of the Takamine guitar although in fairness the Takamine is more expensive.

The build of the Washburn is very sturdy and is definitely built to last, although it is probably fair to say that if you do become a more serious player you will need to upgrade.

For the price of the Washburn D10S you aren’t going to come across many better guitars. The Alvarez RD8 is possibly the best alternative if this is the most you can afford. If you have A little more cash then others are a better option but the in terms of value for money this is still one of the best acoustic guitars available.

Martin Acoustic Guitars

Martin acoustic guitars can be traced back in the USA to 1833 when C. F. Martin Sr. arrived in New York from Germany with his family and set up his luthier shop in the city. The legendary Martin guitars were born.

The company also made mandolins for a time, as well as ukuleles and steel-stringed Hawaiian guitars when these instruments were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, their mainstay was and continues to be guitars. Martin acoustic guitars lead the way, but now there are many electric guitars too in the Martin range.

One of the first American singing stars to have a Martin acoustic guitar built specially for him was Jimmy Rodgers. In 1928 Martin made the “Blue Yodel” 000-45 guitar for the man who was known as “The Singing Brakeman.”

Jimmy Rodgers was at the top of his career at that time and arguably the most popular singer in America. The movie he made that same year, aptly titled “The Singing Brakeman,” features Jimmy Rodgers singing and playing the “Blue Yodel” 000-45 guitar made specially for him.

The Singing Cowboys of the 1930s movies were the next to be attracted to Martin acoustic guitars. Gene Autry had the first D-45 created for him in 1933, 100 years after the company was started.

In the 1940s and 1950s it was Country Music that took up the Martin guitars in a big way. Stars of the Grand ‘Ole Opry in Nashville are seen on stage playing Martins. Among the big names of the time are Hank Snow, Lester Flatt, Ernest Tubb, and the biggest star of them all, Hank Williams.

Modern day country rock singer, Neil Young, actually bought an old guitar that had once belonged to Hank Williams. He plays it regularly on stage believing that even a guitar that has gained iconic status as a result of having once been played by a superstar should be used. It’s a 1941 Martin D-28 with herringbone purfling, and Neil believes it sounds as good now as it first did.

In the 1950s country music gave over to rock and roll. Elvis Presley was the young man taking the world by storm. As soon as he could afford a new guitar, Elvis chose a 1942 D-18. It wasn’t long before he decided to get a bigger guitar, and in 1955 he bought a 1954 D-28, a big bodied guitar with a big sound. All of Elvis’s famous Sun Sessions were recorded with this guitar.

Folk music was also big in America during the 1940s through to the 1960s. Legendary singers like Woodie Guthrie played Martin acoustic guitars, as well as other popular groups such as The Kingston Trio, Pete, Paul and Mary, and the Weavers.

In 1990 the 500,000th Martin guitar was produced. It was a HD-28 and it was signed by all employees and placed in the factory museum. Four years later in 1994, Martin went into space when the Shuttle carried a small Backpacker and orbited the earth.

The 1,000,000th of the Martin acoustic guitars was produced in 2004.
